FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Why Do I Need to See My Credit Report?
Many institutions need to know your credit
status before they will approve you, and so knowing your
credit record can give you a heads up on your chances of
receiving all kinds of services. For example, a home loan will
not be approved if you have a bad credit score, and neither will
insurance, a credit card with a low APR, or some times even a
lease on a house of car. So knowing your credit status can be
a short cut to save you time applying to services which you
won't receive.
Another important thing about knowing your credit
score is that
it can show if someone has defrauded you or stolen
your identity. If, for example, someone has been creating
accounts in your name without your knowledge and not paying them, these
accounts
will show up on your 3 free credit reports as a bad score. This will
enables you to take appropriate legal action to have them removed from
your credit records and find the person/s responsible so you can
file a report with police.
Removing fraud charges from your 3 credit report and score
can be extremely difficult. Once my mother had serious charges on her
credit report because someone was filling for a cell phone from
Detroit using
her name. Unfortunately, the phone provider did not believe she
it wasn't her, even though the perpetrator lived in a different residence. To
demonstrate her innocence she had to produce identity and
even mail, as well as her home title to show where she was living.
They would not accept her address was what where she said it was
until she showed them documentary proof.
There are many ways you can improve your credit score. One way
is to use credit cards and regularly clear payments
to show that you are reliable and can be trusted with credit. If
you regularly pay off your balance and are on time with gas,
phone, electric, and utility bills, this also will help. In the
long run, it's worth keeping good credit,
because it means you qualify for better interest rates, greater
lines of credit, and all kinds of other financial benefits that
you wouldn't otherwise receive. You've got
nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Your 3-in-1 Credit Report
Everyone has one credit report at each of the three credit
reporting bureaus, TransUnion, Equifax and Experion. Every time
you apply for credit, the lender scrutinizes at least one copy
(sometimes all three) of your credit reports, enabling them to
decide whether or not to extend credit to you.
Who can view my credit report? Virtually anyone
can view your credit report, that is, any potential lender, even
utility companies cab view your report. That's how important
your credit score is. Creditors pay a nominal fee to the credit
reporting bureaus to access your credit report and credit risk.
Your free 3 in 1 credit reports are absolutely
free. The law says you are entitled to check your credit report
from each bureau one every year for free.
What's Inside My Free Credit Reports?
There are four parts in your credit report. Each part is one
piece of your total credit record. What you should do
next is check each part for errors such as common misspellings
such as name confusions.
Sections 1 - contains personal data such as your
name, and aliases, your address, current and previous employers
and your date of birth.
